Frset vs Raycast
Raycast is a launcher and command platform. Frset brings clipboard, screenshot, content tools, and web search into the menu bar.
Raycast and Frset both help you start tasks from the keyboard, but they focus on different work. Raycast centers on launching apps, finding files, running commands, and connecting extensions. Frset brings clipboard organization, screenshot capture and OCR, everyday content tools, and multiple web search options into one menu bar app.
If you want to replace Raycast completely, list the launcher commands, extensions, and shortcuts you rely on first. Frset can take over tasks involving copied content, screenshots, and text processing, but it is not a one-for-one replacement for Raycast's launcher or extension platform. You can also use both.
Feature comparison
| Feature | Frset | Raycast |
|---|---|---|
| Launch apps, find files, and run commands | Focuses on saved content and tools inside Frset; not a general-purpose launcher | Root Search covers apps, files, commands, and extensions |
| Clipboard history | Find items by type, tags, display titles, and aliases; notes are separate entries | Search, filter, pin, and sequentially paste text, images, files, links, and more |
| Screenshots | Capture, annotate, take scrolling screenshots, extract text, and pin references | Search Screenshots finds, previews, and reuses screenshots or recordings on disk; Paste Latest Screenshot pastes the newest capture |
| Find text in images | Indexing is off by default; search eligible Frset screenshots when enabled | Enable OCR for clipboard images or screenshots in watched folders |
| Built-in tools | Translation, summaries, JSON, QR codes, UUIDs, timestamps, image compression, encoding, and more | Core commands include Calculator, Calendar, Window Management, and Snippets, with extensions available |
| Web search | Choose built-in or custom search engines and send queries to the relevant site or service | Quicklinks can save search URLs, such as Google, and open them from Root Search |
| Extensions and automation | Built-in tools and configured AI prompts | Public extensions, script commands, and custom extensions connect to more apps and services |
The useful comparison is not the number of features. It is whether a task is built in, needs configuration, and where its result opens.
Launcher, tools, and web search
If you regularly launch apps, find files, run commands, or work across third-party services from one shortcut, Raycast's Root Search and extension ecosystem fit that role better. Extensions can bring services into the command interface, beyond the purpose of Frset's built-in utilities.
Frset is better suited to starting with a piece of text, a screenshot, or something you've saved. Its built-in tools include translation, summaries, QR codes, UUIDs, timestamps, JSON formatting, image compression, IP lookup, variable-name suggestions, and text encoding. You can also configure search engines in the search bar. Choosing one sends your query to that website or service; Frset does not index or display the site's search results itself. Remote translation, image compression, and AI features may send submitted content to a service provider.
Raycast Quicklinks can also launch web searches: save a URL with a query parameter, then find and open it from Root Search. Alfred also supports default and custom web searches. If most of your work starts with a web query rather than a command, compare the search entry points, shortcuts, and destination sites—not only clipboard features.
Finding screenshots vs. making them
Raycast's screenshot search focuses on finding and reusing existing files. Search Screenshots watches selected folders, including the macOS screenshot location, Desktop, and CleanShot X folders by default. With text recognition enabled, you can search recognized text. Paste Latest Screenshot sends the most recent capture to the active app. File permissions and where screenshots are saved affect what Raycast can find.
Frset focuses on capture and follow-up work: select an area, annotate it, take a scrolling screenshot, extract or translate text, or pin the image as a reference. Screenshot Search is off by default; when enabled, it builds a local OCR index for eligible Frset screenshots. It does not scan every screenshot folder. Raycast may fit better if you mainly need to search existing captures; Frset offers a more connected flow when you need to capture and work with a screenshot. Scrolling capture results depend on the target app.
Clipboard, free plans, and sync
Raycast's free plan includes clipboard history with three months of retention. Paid plans offer longer retention, up to unlimited. Clipboard History supports multiple content types, image OCR, and Paste Sequentially. Frset Free lets you access the most recent 24 hours of ordinary history, with a separate seven-day cleanup rule; Pro retention follows your settings and can have a storage limit. Organization and sequential-paste behavior differ, so retention alone does not tell the whole story.
Raycast currently lists Pro from $10 per month or $96 per year and includes paid features such as AI. Frset Pro offers monthly, annual, and lifetime options; see current plans for pricing.
Raycast Cloud Sync does not sync clipboard history, and Frset clipboard history is stored locally. Evaluate cloud and remote features separately: Frset's online translation, some AI tools, and image compression services may process submitted content. Local clipboard storage does not mean every feature runs offline.
Which one fits?
- Choose Raycast if you rely on app and file search, quick commands, extensions, or system actions from one search bar.
- Choose Frset if you want clipboard organization, screenshot capture and processing, content tools, and common web searches together in the menu bar.
- Use both if Raycast handles launching, files, and extensions while Frset handles clipboard, screenshots, and content work. Assign separate shortcuts and decide which app records clipboard history.
Before migrating, list the Raycast commands, extensions, snippets, and shortcuts you use most. Do not assume they can be imported into Frset. Keep your existing setup and test paste, screenshot, and search flows with a small collection before deciding whether to disable Raycast.
